A Checklist for National Car Care Month

With winter disappearing behind us and summer just on the horizon, it’s that time of year when we should begin reflecting on how we can make the rest of the year as simple and stress-free as possible.

One easy way to do that? Saving time and money by taking care of our vehicles. Luckily, there’s no better time to start on this mid-year resolution than right now: National Car Care Month. Below, we’ll show you a few essential things you can start doing today.

4 Vital Checkups for Your Vehicle

Get an Oil Change

If you do nothing else for your vehicle this month, get an oil change. Getting routine oil changes is a necessity to maintain good vehicle health and proper engine function. Without proper lubrication, the parts in your vehicle’s engine will begin to grind against one another and ultimately wear down, leading to engine failure. Schedule an appointment with a trusted service professional if your car is due.

Inspect Your Battery

As the weather outside begins to heat up, the wiring in your vehicle’s electrical system can begin to malfunction, or even fail. To minimize the risks of this happening, make sure your vehicle’s battery is securely mounted and wipe away any corrosive substances that may have built up over time. If it’s been more than 3 years since you last changed your battery, consider getting it replaced.

Replace All Necessary Fluids

Maintaining adequate fluid levels is crucial to ensuring proper function of your vehicle’s mechanical systems. Before the month is over, give your vehicle’s primary fluids — transmission, power steering, coolant, and brakes — a once over and top them off if they’re low. This is especially important for your coolant: according to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, the greatest cause for breakdowns in the summer is overheating.

Check Your Tires

Your tires have a major impact on plenty of other aspects of driving, including cornering, braking, and fuel economy. Guaranteeing your tires are safe to drive on is easy: check your tire pressure, and inspect their treads for severe wear and bald spots. Remember that you should also have your tires rotated every time you have your oil changed.
